The Dixie National Forest is the largest forest in Utah. It occupies close to two million acres and stretches 170 miles across southern Utah. It is the largest National Forest in Utah and straddles the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River. Elevations range from 2,800 feet near St. George, Utah to 11,322 feet at Blue Bell Knoll on Boulder Mountain. The southern rim of the Great Basin, near the Colorado River, provides spectacular scenery. Colorado River canyons are made up of many-colored cliffs and steep-walled gorges. The forest's red sandstone formations in Red Canyon are similar to those of Bryce Canyon National Park. Boulder Mountain and the many different lakes provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, and viewing outstanding scenery. The forest offers camping, hunting, viewing scenery, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, camping, picnicking, resort lodging, recreation residence, sledding, skiing, hunting, gathering forest products, viewing interpretive exhibits, hiking, viewing scenery, driving for pleasure, snowmobiling, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, and fishing. How To Get There: From the Red Canyon Visitor Center: Take Highway 12 east for 4 miles. One quarter of a mile after you clear the top of the long hill, you'll see an improved dirt road on your right. Turn right onto this road, and follow it for approximately 2 miles From the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center: Take Highway 12 west for 6 miles. Just before the long down hill descent, you'll see an improved dirt road on your left. Turn left onto this road, and follow it for approximately 2 miles Hiking Trails in Dixie National Forest The following hiking trails have been summarized from information received from the National Forest Service. Unless otherwise indicated all trails below offer fantastic scenery of brilliant red rocks and formations.
